Abstract
This study examines the approaches adopted by the parents in creating a learning environment at home. Parents are significant people in child's life. They have the capability to mould the child in such a way that the child becomes one of the best students in terms of academic performance in the school. The subjects were three student-parent pairs. This was purposively selected for the study.
I used interpretivist approach to conduct the study. Two semi structured questionnaires were used to gather data. One questionnaire was designed to gather data from the parents while the other, to gather data from the students.
An eloquent discussions of the findings revealed that the parents have used different techniques such as helping the child with the homework, spending quality time with the child, providing emotional support and building strong communication process with the child. Furthermore, based on the analysis it was evident that parents perceive the fact, that parental involvement in the child's life have great impact on the child's performances. Some of the benefits identified were the enhancements of the self- esteem. Self-confidence and the motivation of doing the work better.
In the same manner, the data analysis revealed that the most powerful parental approaches such as the communication of expectations with the student and the emotional support provided by the parents to make the student perform better. And the other disturbing fact revealed in the findings from the perception of parent is that parents themselves cannot make differences as there are student- related factors like student's responsibility and the matureness.
