Abstract
Illicit immigrant has turned into a worldwide issue influencing the financial prospects of different nations encountering substantial influx of migrants. The illegal workers populace is expanding at alarming rate without adequate controls measure. The purpose of this study is determining why such a large number of workers are on the loose in Maldives and those who are responsible for it and identify the causes of illegal immigrant status among workers. Moreover identify both positive and negative impacts to the society, economy and major industries such as construction, agriculture and tourism in Maldives due to mass number of illegal immigrants.
Qualitative approach was adopted to identify reasons behind the mass number of illegal workers lives in Maldives and their impacts. Major qualitative techniques used in this research were interview and documentary analysis. Qualitative methods enable getting a more sensible feel of the world that cannot be knowledgeable about the numerical information and measurable investigation utilized as a part of quantitative research and it is more flexible ways to perform data collection, subsequent analysis, and interpretation of collected information.
The Maldivian economy must have the capacity to bolster a developed local populace that is now feeling the weights of limited employment prospects. Maldivian culture is experiencing colossal changes because of outside impacts including that's of neighboring nations which don't generally gel with local social standards, conventions and Islamic religious character. Overstaying illegal workers are intensifying the financial issues fundamentally.
The key findings of the study demonstrate there is large number of human trafficking victims among the illegal worker lives in Maldives and they choses to be illegal due to bad experience with employer or employment agencies. Moreover, inadequate resources available within the law enforcement organisation lead difficult to monitor and control illegal workers lives in throughout the Maldives. There are various other factors have relationship with increasing number of illegal workers such as less commitment from policy makers, lack of legislation related to migrant workers, implementation issues, no proper actions against human trafficking, no effective procedure for human trafficking victims, insufficient monitoring mechanism, social impacts are not address rightfully, lack of commitment of law enforcement, corruptions within government departments and frequent changes of policies.
