Abstract:
This research aimed to explore the intrinsic and extrinsic factors contributing to teachers' motivation in Maldives. The main research question of the study was what are the factors affecting motivation among Maldivian primary school teachers? The study utilized a qualitative research design. A sample of 10 participants were used semi - structured interviews as the primary source of data. The gathered data was analysed by using thematic analysis. It was found out that these teachers were highly demotivated. Nevertheless, the findings reveal that motivation of teachers could be enhanced by appreciating, empowering, treating them fairly and by providing supportive positive work environment. The factors which contribute to demotivate were; under-appreciation, lack of teacher empowerment, lack of equity, financial crisis and negative work environment
