ABSTRACT
This study pursued to identify the employee perception of fairness towards the current performance
appraisal system by identifying the influential factors along with determining supervisor's role in changing
the employee perception and how the perceived fairness affects the employee performance. In addition
to that, the research also identified the ways in which the issues of the PA system could be improved.
National Drug Agency was chosen as the context where the research was carried out. A population of 80
employees is working at NDA, which is the only drug treatment center in Maldives. As the issue of
performance appraisal has become a concerned problem, it was believed that it is necessary to identify
how employees feel towards the current PA system, thus the need of this research was identified.
The methodology of the research was interpretive research and it uses both qualitative and quantitative
method to collect data, which further classified into interview and questionnaire. The ethical perspectives
of the research were very much stressed in the research including confidentiality and anonymity as
important aspects to be considered! in the research.
The research findings were based on the employee perception of fairness in PA. The findings generated
from the questionnaire revealed that the PA system as moderately lair while the interview result showed
that the PA system was unfair with the highest percentage of responses. The main issue in the system was
identified as favoritism and the highest percentage of people believed that providing relevant training
would eliminate this issue.
The limitation of the research includes limiting the research collection to a single context, which restricts
generalization. Therefore, generalization was recommended in a further research. In addition to that, the
recommendations proposed were based on the
findings generated. Providing training to the supervisors was found to be an effective way of making the
supervisors aware of the unethical issues related to PA.
The findings of the research were an aid to the existing studies. Moreover, this research is important as
to find the current issues related to the system in regard with employees views and also this research
would be a contribution that would help to improve further researches conducted in this area. Most
importantly, the gaps identified in the existing research would be identified and filled in this research that
will help those who take the consideration of this research for a practical application to make the PA
system more effective.
