ABSTRACT
Like the developing place, Male' also face challenges in municipal Solid waste management sector. Being the capital of Maldives with a population of more than 150,000 and being one of the most congested city in the world the attention given to MSW management is very low. With the urbanization, economic growth and increase in population also results an increase in waste generated in Male' also increases frequently. Littering on road, sea and dumping of waste on pavement evidences the incapability of local government to cater an effective and efficient MSW management to the huge quantity of waste generated by the population. Ineffective and inefficient MSW management system leads to health hazards and have a negative impact on the environment. Therefore, it is essential to improve the current MSW system and make it an effective and efficient it is essential to understand and identify the factors that are hindering. This research is based on comprehensive literature review and in-depth interview conducted with chosen four local authorities involved in MSW management. Through this research factors that are hindering implementation of an effective MSW management system in Male' would be identified and approaches to resolve these factors would be formulated. The conceptual framework formulated main key objectives and issues which should be addressed by MSW management strategies with regard to political, institutional, social, financial, economic and technical aspects.
