Abstract:
This study sought to determine the relationship between principals leadership style as perceived by teachers and academic achievement of the students. The leadership styles examined in this study are being confined to instructional and transformational leadership. The current study was grounded on a non-experimental, cross sectional research design. A quantitative research study design was employed and the study population compromises of 165 teachers selected using random sampling technique. The instruments used in this study are two questionnaires. The first one is Principals Instructional Management Rating Scale (PMIRS) and the second one is Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ-5x) Data were analyzed using both inferential and descriptive statistical techniques. Spearman Rho test, Mann Whitney U test and Kruskal Wallis test have been used. The result reveals that there is a positive strong relationship between instructional leadership style of principals and academic achievement. The result also shows that there is a positive substantial relationship between transformational leadership style and the academic achievement of the students. Moreover, this study has indicated the impact of different dimensions of instructional and transformational leadership styles.
