ABSTRACT
Maldives Airports Company (MACL) as the air navigation service provider is responsible for the air traffic control in Maldives Flight Information Region (FIR). Communication is the primary source used by air traffic controllers to guide and manage the air traffic in controlled airspace. Communication equipment allows establishing radio calls between controllers and pilots to provide instructions and guidance information to maintain safe and efficient routes. The PSTN radio circuits often getting unserviceable is one of the main issues in present communication equipment. It also has several other limitations described in this dissertation. The dissertation has answered the questions which highlight the fact the communication infrastructure based on VoiP has a greater advantage over the PSTN network for ATC environment. This study has determined the readiness of adopting VoIP for ATC voice communication. The solution will optimize the voice communication performance, which would be beneficial on various aspects such as system's performance, reliability, availability, redundancy and feasibility.
