Abstract
A number of teachers trained in the Maldives and abroad for the profession to work in different schools have been gradually leaving the school setting for other professions. This is a big issue among the schools in Maldives at present.
Using the interpretive paradigm, this research is a case study of a Maldivian school and examined the factors that are associated with teachers' job satisfaction and its impact on their performance. Seven teachers from the selected school participated in individual interviews and in participant observation.
Four major themes emerged from the findings. A major finding of the study was that teachers were satisfied with some forms of relationships while dissatisfied with others. While they were satisfied with the relationships they had with their colleagues and parents and community, they were dissatisfied with the relationship they had with their administration. The study also found that the majority of teachers are satisfied with challenges such as discipline problems, and positively impacting the lives of the students. A significant finding of this study is that job and its elements such as the salary, benefits, work hours and required duties contributes to job dissatisfaction.
However, the study showed that only one out of the four respondents are dissatisfied about the job and want to quit.
The study strongly recommends the school should acknowledge the existence of dissatisfaction amongst teachers and identify what school related factors affect the teachers' performance.
