Abstract:
Within the past decade, educational institutions in the Maldives has encouraged new challenges such as reforming curriculum and living up to the global competition in attaining excellence in education for its students. Nevertheless, from the way policy reform of the new curriculum of the Maldives, stakeholders have been ascribing the poor quality of learners and less development of school due to lack of motivation of teachers. And one of the challenges in education system now is to improve quality of primary education. Thus, the purpose of this study was to identify the role of the leading teachers in motivating for teachers for effective teaching in a primary school of Maldives.
A qualitative case study, informed by the interpretivist research paradigm, was used to explore the issue. One of the primary school in Fuvahmulah was purposefully selected for this study and 10 participants took part, of whom six were teachers and four were leading teachers. Data was collected through unstructured in-depth interviews.
The finding of this study reflect major themes. They are: role of leading teachers, impact on teachers, teaching enhancement, minimizing demotivation and suggestion for improvement. These findings significance to improve the motivation of teachers and helps to educator's further improvement of leading teachers' role in motivating teachers for effective teaching.
In conclusion to the study, research implication and areas for further research and improvement have been suggested which would be informed to the senior management of selected school and ministry of education of Maldives.
