Abstract:
The purpose of this qualitative research is to explore and understand the current Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) system of the Maldives. Given that TVET plays an important role in the development of a country by producing skilled labours, it is important to identify the challenges faced by the TVET system. Identifying these problems would facilitate in overcoming these challenges to improve the quality of the workforce.
Teachers and coordinators involved in providing vocational education were selected as participants for the research. In the study, an institution and a school that conducts vocational programs were selected along with TVET Authority, which is the TVET provider in Maldives. Two audio recorded, semi-structured interviews from each party were taken which was followed by open-ended questionnaires provided to teachers and coordinators. A thematic analysis of data was carried out in order to review the current TVET system.
Based on the participants' responses, six themes were identified. These are impact, innovation and creativity, knowledge base, stakeholder engagement, monitoring and evaluation, and efficiency. This research showed that though the TVET system in the Maldives is improving, there are challenges that are faced by the TVET system.
This research presents the study in seven chapters. Chapter 1: Introduction, Chapter 2: Contextualization, Chapter 3: Review of Literature, Chapter 4: Methodology, Chapter 5: Findings, Chapter 6: Evaluation of Findings and Chapter 7: Conclusion.
