Abstract:
This research was designed to gain an in-depth insight to the factors affecting students' achievement in mathematics. The aim of this research is to identify the factors related to students' personality, school and family. Relevant literature has been examined to explore the concepts relating to students academic achievement of mathematics. The research design adapted in this research was qualitative case study. Data for this research was gathered through semi-structured interviews of students and teachers. The students and teachers involved collaborated to identify the factors: especially teachers provided crucial suggestion to the issue. Thematic coding of data identified the students and teachers perspectives the factors affecting achievement. The report concludes that there are personal factors, school related factors and family related factors that affect students' achievement in mathematics. Personal factors identified are attitudes, motivation and self-efficiency. School related factors are classroom environment, support from management and teaching and learning strategies. Family related factors are parental support and parent teacher relationship. The report finishes with implications for further studies.
