Abstract

The aims of this study is to find out the effects of leadership styles of school principals on teachers motivation. The leadership styles examined in this study are being limited to transformational and transactional leadership. The research was based on a non-experimental, cross sectional research design. The sample for this study was drawn out by using the stratified random sampling technique. The research was conducted among 77 teachers of a selected school, from the capital of the maldives, Male'. The instruments used are two questionnaires. The first on is multifactor leadership questionnaire (MLQ-5x) and the second one is the Teacher Job Satisfaction Questionnaire (tjsq). The data has been analysed by using both inferential and descriptive statistical techniques. As for the inferential statistics spearman rho test and multiple regression tests have been used. The findings from this study have shown that there is a significant relationship with transformational leadership styles of school principals and teachers, motivation as perceived by teachers. However, the relationship between transactional leadership styles of school principals and teachers. Motivation is insignificant as perceived by the teachers. Furthermore, this study has explored the effects of the various dimensions of transformational and transactional leadership styles and teachers motivations. Moreover, the study highlights the effects of leadership styles on intrinsic and extrinsic motivational factors.
