Abstract:
This is a qualitative correlation study which has explored the relationship between parental involvement and academic achievement of the eighth grade students. The study population included parents of the students attending to a selected local government school of Male', Maldives who have been selected using stratified random sampling. Hoover-Dempsey & Sandler Parental Involvement Project (PIP) questionnaire was used to collect data from 36 parents of students studying in secondary grade eight. Student's first term marks of 2016 was used as the academic achievement. The researcher linked parent's response to the student's academic in order to obtain the necessary data for the study.
Survey response were used to compile descriptive and inferential statistics. Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) with alpha of 0.05 was used to analyze the data for descriptive statistics and correlation. Spearman's rho was used to calculate the correlation between parental involvement and academic achievement.
The descriptive result shows that there is a high level of parental involvement in the selected group of parents. The statistical result shows that there exists a significant relationship between parental involvement and academic achievement of the secondary school students. The result also shows that there was a moderate relationship between parental involvement at home and academic achievement of the students. Moreover, the result indicates that there was a substantial relationship between parental involvement at school and academic achievement of the students. Hence, parental involvement at school was considered an important element to improve the academic achievement of the students.
