Abstract:
This was study aimed to explore the job satisfaction among secondary teachers in a Maldivian school. The qualitative phenomenological study was based on Herzberg's motivation-hygiene theory, the hygiene factors that influence job dissatisfaction of teachers and the motivation factors that influence teachers' job satisfaction of a school were analyzed to understand their job satisfaction. Data for the research study was collected from six participants. A purposive sampling of six teachers teaching to secondary grades were chosen from Ghaazee School. The data was collected through semi structured interviews. The interviews were recorded and transcribed for data analysis.
The findings indicated that Job satisfaction varies from person to person. No two person working in the same conditions and job specifications have the same attitude towards the work. They are neither satisfied equally. The study also found that the teachers of the school are happier about the content of the job rather the context of the job. School administration, implementation of policies, security and work conditions has created a huge amount of dissatisfaction among the teachers. These factors need to be changed or improved for the betterment of teachers. The most motivation factor identified rom the study for the teachers at this school is achievement. The ability to complete the task on time. Teamwork and help from the supervisors found to be the contributing factors to successful work completion. Therefore, the study also concludes that both motivation factors and hygiene factors are interrelated and interdependent. To provide effective motivation factors such as achievement the interpersonal relationships and work conditions has to stay positive and suitable.
