Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find the effect of facebook usage on the academic performance of secondary students of Addu City. In addition, through this research, the relation between students usage of Facebook for academic purpose and their motivation in learning was tested. In addition, the relation between usage of facebook for nonacademic purpose and motivation in learning was found. Likewise, the relation between the time students spend on Facebook and their academic performance was compared. Finally, the research tests for any significant difference between students' gender, education (grade), age and majors with motivation for learning. This design for this research is a cross sectional survey and a total of 281 secondary students from two schools of Addu City participated in this research. A previously reliability tested questionnaire was used with some modification. The result of this study showed a negative correlation between students and their academic performance. But it did not show any significant correlation between academic performance and non-academic related activities on Facebook. Also this research did not find any correlation between time spent on Facebook with academic performance
