Abstract

Background: Stroke is a leading public health concern and it is the third most common reason of death in Maldives. It is mostly an illness commonly encountered by older people, which affect them physical, emotional and social difficulties and reduced the value of their natural life. The number of stroke patients has been increasing as the life expectancy are increasing and the percentage of elderly patients are cumulative in the Maldives. The most significant factors influencing the effect of stroke are nurses' knowledge, attitude and current practices towards stroke care.

Objective: To assess nurses' knowledge, attitude and current practices towards caring of stroke patients at lndhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital.

Design: A self-administered questionnaire has been administered to 159 nurses.

Setting: IGMH ( Medical ward, Surgical ward, ICU, ER, Private ward 1-4, Orthopedics ward).

Participants: 159 nurses involved in direct stroke care at IGMH.

Results: Out of 159 participants 100% nurses completed the questionnaire. Majority of the participants had satisfactory level of knowledge, positive attitude and poor practices.

Implication: This study provides baseline data to redesign educational activities within the nursing employees of IGM1-1. The results of this study have implications on nursing education, practices and future research in Maldives at IGMH.

Attitude: Nurses' views about stroke care, particularly as presented by their behavior towards caring stroke patients who are admitted at IGMH and receive care.

Practice: The current practice of nurses at IGMH towards stroke care such as oral care, bed bathing, position changing, tube feeding etc.

Stroke care: Care provided to stroke patients by nurses of IGMH in an organized way according to a nursing care plan.
