Abstract

This study explores how teachers use ICI and what they perceive as the role of ICT in facilitating teaching and learning process in a secondary school of Fuvahmulah. Five teachers', purposefully selected, were interviewed. The views expressed by the teachers were summarized and discussed under six themes. The results showed that ICT are used by all the teachers to a substantial amount, mostly computers, laptops and PowerPoint presentations with videos and animations. Teacher's' believe that ICT, as a flexible tool which can be incorporated in any part of the lesson and a promising tool in fast content delivery while attending all the types and levels of learners in the class. In addition, ICT facilitates in understanding of abstract concepts, and increase students' engagement and interest in learning. Moreover, ICT helps to develop higher order thinking skills, Therefore, it is understood that ICT can play an immense role in facilitating teaching and learning in students. Moreover, the present research has identified various barriers faced by teachers in incorporating ICT effectively in lessons. Barriers identified were Lack of time for preparation, resistance to change the traditional method of teaching, lack of competence and confidence of teachers and technical issues faced by teachers when incorporating 1CT. Furthermore, the paper also has some recommendations for teachers' as well as the management of the school and provides a foundation for further studies based on the phenomena. Such further studies will be helpful in improving the practices in the use of ICT in other schools of Fuvahmulah
