Implementation of key stage-2 the new mathematics curriculum in Male' schools : challenges faced by the teachers / Mausooma Ali

Abstract

There is about 200 government schools in the Maldives which have been using the national curriculum. In Male' city. there were 12 primary and secondary schools that practices the new national mathematics curriculum.
The new national mathematics curriculum of Maldives was introduced in 2015 at the beginning of the academic year in 2015. The curriculum was introduced in all the government schools.
The purpose of this study is to find out the challenges to implement the New National Curriculum of Maldives. The title of the study is "Implementation of key stage 2 -The new Mathematics Curriculum in Male' schools: Challenges faced by teachers".
The qualitative case study was used to explore the issue. One of the primary schools in Male was selected purposefully for the study and 10 participants took part in the study two leading teachers and 8 mathematics teachers. In-depth interviews were used and thematic data analysis used to analyze the data.
The findings of this study suggested that there were 8 major challenges were found in the study.
The study suggested that challenges in the implementation of new mathematics curriculum were lack of information about the curriculum, and lack of resources and facilities, huge content in the curriculum, lack of curriculum developer's involvement, teacher-student ratio, parents-students involvement, in-sufficient time and teachers quality.
