Abstract
Due to multiple cases or threats faced, protection of personal information has been a topic of research for years. These cases or threats are not frequent in Maldives and lack various aspects to protecting personal information compared to large and developed countries. The primary purpose of this study explores how Maldivian organizations handle personal information of its employees. The Aim of this research is to highlight the importance of privacy in Maldives and develop an appropriate privacy policy that suits the culture, laws, ethics and protects employee personal data.
Maldives lack laws, regulations, and research done to protect employee personal data or to identify the concerns of employees regarding the collection and storing of personal information. Hence to minimize the gap, this study focuses on identifying employee concerns or perspective and how the organizations store and process personal information of employees. However, this research focuses on public organizations that operate within Maldives.
To achieve the purpose of this study, various international laws, regulations and policies were examined and compared with the current situation of Maldives when handling employee personal information. It is believed that Maldives needs proper regulations to protect personal information. However, organizations can protect personal information without a regulation as a must, with a small amount of effort. What so ever, to achieve this, awareness of employees, organizational management and authorities needs to be increased, regarding the issues faced by leakage of personal information of employees.
