Abstract
Male' being one of the densely populated cities with congested living conditions, leads to numerous social issues. As the crime rate, and anti-social are in the rise among the youngster. These youngsters encompass the secondary students in the cohort.
This research was conducted to explore the contributing factors for student absenteeism in secondary grades. Four major factors emerged from the research, namely: Personal factors, family related factors, school related factors and community and system related factors.
Furthermore, the research also looked into the existing protecting factors within the school. These factors included the existing policies, school community and catering to individual needs of students.
The crosscutting factor in both aspects was the need of good rapport among all stakeholders. Hence it was recommended to build a good networking channels which could lead to healthy relationships among the stakeholders to foster a conducive learning environment to retain students from being absent.
For further research. It is recommended to include students' voice in the research, for an in depth understanding of the concept from various angles.
