Abstract

The leading teachers (supervisors) in Maldivian schools are mainly supervise teaching and learning. They carry out the responsibility of the supervision in order to bring beneficial change to the teaching and maintain sustainable result. The study find out the current role of the leading teachers, the effects of these roles on teacher development, and leading teacher's role can facilitate in improving teaching and teacher development. The study investigates in one of the primary schools which locates in the southern area of the Maldives. It is included 3 teachers, 2 leading teachers and the professional development coordinator of the selected school for sampling frame of the study. The information gathered as qualitative study through interview. This study helps to provide helpful information for the future researches. The study revealed that most of the roles of leading teachers need to be improved. All the teachers and leading teachers of the school need to be aware of the supervision model used at the selected school. It was also shown that subject coordination need to be improved in such a way that align with the new curriculum and include the key competencies. Besides, the updated teaching techniques and strategies need to be practiced in the classroom as well as to develop teachers. Need analysis of the professional development programmes are necessary to be conducted and address needy area of all the teachers. Differentiated programmes are also very important for different levels of the teachers in order to develop them. Follow up and evaluation of the professional development programmes is conducted in the school for checking the effectiveness of these programmes.
