Abstract
This study examined the aspects of parental involvement that lead to students' achievement. The study examined the factors that influenced parental involvement in the school activities at primary and secondary level, the relationship between parental involvement with parental level of education and socioeconomic status of the parents, way to aware parents on their importance to the school and students to bring out an overall achievement,
and ways to overcome the barriers that hinder parental involvement.
The research questions of the study included; factors influence parents' involvement in school activities at the primary and secondary level. The ways parental involvement have influences on students' achievement, strategies that would improve parental involvement, and how the school can overcome the persistent barriers that hinder parental involvement.
The data of the study were analyzed using a qualitative approach and interviews were taken from five teachers and five parents of the research school. The data was analyzed using content analysis method. The study explored the theory of Joyce Epstein's (1995) model on six types of parental involvement and the theory of Hoover-Dempsey and Sandler (2005) on parental involvement.
The findings of the study indicated that there is a positive correlation between parental involvement and student achievement. Additionally, the partnership between the school and parents should be enhanced to increase student achievement. The finding indicated communication between the school and parents promotes parental involvement and student achievement. On the other hand, the participant's responses showed that parental involvement level in the school at present needed to be reformed with the help of effective strategies and parent involvement programs to increase parental involvement as well as student achievement.
