Abstract
The new national educational modules were taken off in 2015 for Establishment of foundation stage(preschool) and Key stage 1(grades 1-3), in 2016 Key stage 2 (grade 4-6), in 2017 key stage 3 grade 7 and in 2018 grade 8 was actualized. New materials have been produced for the usage of the national educational modules alongside trainings on different parts of the educational programs. Despite the fact that usage has begun, ceaseless help is required by educators and schools for successful execution of the educational modules. This study investigated the challenges facing teachers of key stage l (grade 1,2,3) in implementing the new curriculum of the Maldives in a selected school of the Maldives. In addition to this the study also focused to identify suggested ways to minimize the challenges. The study employed a qualitative research approach which utilized a case study research design. The sample of the study included 8 teachers of the selected school, who were randomly selected, from key stage 1,3 teachers from grade 1 and 2,2 teachers from grade3. Interviews were used to collect the required information. The collected data were analyzed using content analysis. The findings established that teachers faced a variety of challenges which impeded the effective implementation of the new curriculum. The analysis found that, in- service training was the most significant need for the teachers to implement the new curriculum in key stage 1. In the light of these findings it was recommended that, Ministry of Education should device primary, regional and school development support program in order to implement the new curriculum effectively and efficiently to provide quality education which is essential for the future generation.
