Abstract

Bullying has become a problem which a significant number of students have to face during their years of schooling, Studies have been conducted to find out the magnitude of the problem in the Maldives, telling only a small part of the story. Thus, the purpose of this study was to find out how teachers understand and intervene in situations of bullying in a Maldivian school.

Findings of this study suggest that teachers' definition of bullying were inconsistent with the definitions present in the literature. It further showed that teachers use three main ways of intervention; speaking to the students, involving colleagues and other school staff and speaking to the parents. In addition to these, factors which influence teachers' intervention and challenges faced were also highlighted by the study.

In conclusion to the study, research implications for stakeholders and areas for further research have been identified that would inform educational policy and practice of the Republic of Maldives.
