Abstract

The purpose of the study was to identify the factors that affect students' perceptions towards higher secondary mathematics. A case study approach informed by a qualitative method was used to answer the research questions; (1) what is the perception of students towards higher secondary mathematics? (2) What are the main factors which affect students' perception towards higher secondary mathematics? (3) What are strategies that can be used to improve students' perception towards mathematics?

Eccles's expectancy value theory was used a theoretical framework for the study. Eight students were selected for the study through purposive sampling from higher secondary students who study mathematics. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to collect in-depth information for the study. Inductive content analysis method was used to analyze the data to develop themes and categories.

The research identified the different perceptions held by students towards A' level mathematics. The research revealed that these perceptions were built on past experience and the shared experience of former mathematics students. And also, while sonic students' perceptions were based on the usefulness of the subject, the other students' perceptions were based on their intrinsic values and the perceived attainment value the task hold.

The study also revealed that individual perspectives and environmental perspectives affect the students' perception towards mathematics. The individual perspectives identified were attitude towards mathematics, mathematical anxiety, preceived usefulness of the subject, self-efficacy beliefs. Environmental factors that influence students' perception towards mathematics were identified as parental involvement, teacher related factors and myths and beliefs about A' level mathematics.

Furthermore, this study identified the strategies that can be used to improve students' perceptions. The participants believed that using these strategies will enhance students learning in mathematics and hence, will improve the academic achievement in mathematics leading to a positive perceptions among the students.
