Abstract

The main aim of this study is to assess and explore the challenges which are facing the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) Restaurants/Cafes in Hulhumale' Maldives. The significance of this study will be to find out the challenges and give a perspective thinking and approach to overcome these challenges.
The main objective of the study was to find out the challenges faced by small and medium scale restaurants in Hulhumale Land to investigate the relationship between the rescues conducted in other small island nations or cities to .A mix method (qualitative and quantitative) research strategy was used in the study to collect data. Research instrument for the study was survey questionnaire and semi structured interview. For quantitative data analysis descriptive techniques was used while thematic analysis was used to analyze qualitative data.
The findings showed that internal factors like managerial practice, skills and leadership together with external factors like finance, taxation and government policies are the major challenges faced by these restaurants in Hulhumale'. In addition, result from quantitative data showed that leadership style was not affected to employee performance whereas qualitative data analysis showed that there was a relationship between leadership, lack of skilled employees hinders performance. According to the results a more livable city as more job opportunism and facilities within hulhumale' makes people to stay in the place rather than spending most of the day time in HuIhule' or Male' leading to lower demand or sales for restaurants especially these small outlets.
