Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this research is to understand the current procurement policies and procedures and causes of the problems in current procurement system of WAMCO. Also, to find appropriate solutions and provide means for the improvement in the procurement process for future advantage.
Methodology: This research have used interpretive paradigm by using qualitative research method (interviews). This research was designed to be carried out as a case study in order to find out the current procurement practices, issues and ways to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the procurement system of WAMCO. To have a clear view of the current procurement system and improving the effectiveness, employees from top level management, middle level management and senior level were used in interview.
Key findings: The findings revealed that the procurement policy that is used in WAMCO is different from the policies that are used in other companies and government ministries. However the procedure is almost the same. Also, there are issues in the current procurement policy. The issues in current procurement system of WAMCO that was identified from the findings includes; not having an ERP system, employee issues and no proper planning. The factors that could be used to improve the current procurement system includes; implementing an ERP system, proper planning, training and development, benchmarking and from this research it was found that motivation and commitment of the staff can also be used to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of procurement.
Limitations: Accessing some of the information from a government organization was a challenge as some information are considered as confidential. Second, the researcher have been working in the company selected for this research. Also, biasness among the participants may also exist as the participants might not reveal certain information that might create a negative image with the aim of defending the company.
