ABSTRACT

It is clear that these days, tourism industry in the Maldives has become major backbone of the Maldivian economy. One of the most important parts of this industry is employees who are working in the resort. Success of this industry therefore very much depends on these employees. The objective of this research is to examine the employees' motivation in the Paradise Island Resort and Spa.

The methodology of this research was quantitative. For testing purpose researcher created five hypotheses which include pay/income, working condition, promotion, status of the resort, work itself, assuming that these factors have effect on employees' motivation. The population was 748 (N=748) and the sample used in this study was 100 (n=100). The data collection instrument was the questionnaire developed by the researcher. The data were analyzed using Microsoft Excel in which descriptive statistics and multiple regressions were carried out to test significance of hypotheses. The finding of this research indicates that employees' of Paradise Island Resort and Spa are motivated when they are assigned to challenging, creative or interesting work. Factors such as pay/income, working condition, promotion and status of the resort are found to be insignificant as factors that affect employees' motivation.
