Abstract
This study explores the impact of school-based professional development programmes in primary schools of Maldives. The research aims to explore how teacher develops their professional career through schoolbased professional development programmes in primary schools. Further, it intent to explore the effectiveness of school-based professional development on instructional practices in classrooms and find out whether those programmes are needful for teacher in primary schools. The literature review would be focused on the professional development in the background of theoretical assumptions of Social Learning Theory as a main theory. This is a qualitative research done to explore how school-based professional development programmes impact in primary schools of Maldives. Data were gathered through a semi-structures interview questionnaire administered to nine participants including six teachers, two leading teachers, and a professional development coordinator from the selected schools. The study indicated that school-based professional development programmes have positive impact on teaching and learning in primary schools of Maldives. The findings of this study also revealed that teachers develop their professional career through school-based professional development programmes. It also showed that professional development programmed has a great impact on teaching enhancement. Further, the results indicated the effectiveness of professional development programmes conduct in schools by various means and are discussed in the study
