Abstract:
This qualitative study aims to explore the difficulties in learning English language in a primary school in Maldives. A sample size of four students and two teachers from grade seven participated in the study. Two instruments were used to gather data: an open ended questionnaire and a semi-structured interview. Though, dozens of studies have contributed to language learning, very few studies have been done to find out the difficulties on learning English language. So, this study found out student and teacher perception on difficulties in learning English language as well as various other factors that affect the learning of the students. Furthermore, data was analyzed by using a coding system. The finding of the study show that there are difficulties in learning English language. However, these difficulties and the reasons why they find certain areas difficult vary among students.
