Abstract:
Motivation is the key to success. Only motivated teachers can bring success to the education system. As a result, studying teacher motivation factors are important for the success of educational goals. Government teachers in Maldives have been requesting to increase their salary since years ago. Teachers have been requesting to reflect their hard work in pay. They have conducted a protest asking to adjust their salary in line with the level of responsibilities laid on their shoulders. However, until today, their salary is less than a labour category staff at independent institutions of the government. Therefore, the objective of this study was to find out the relationship between teacher motivation and financial incentives in a government school in Male', Maldives. The study also found out the difference between the importance of financial and non-financial incentives for teacher motivation. Quantitative research method was used in which cross-sectional survey method was used to conduct the study. The sample size was 60 teachers who were selected by using simple random sampling method. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data. The study found that there was a very positive relationship between financial incentives and teacher motivation. In addition, the study found that there was no significant difference between the importance of financial and non-financial incentives for teacher motivation. Moreover, the results reported that direct and indirect financial incentives were equally important for teacher motivation. The study recommended that all stakeholders should consider putting in place policies that will provide attractive incentives for teachers.
