Abstract

The main aim of education in Maldives is to produce productive citizens who possess physical, intellectual and psychological competencies needed for his/her own well-being in the Muslim Maldivian society. Lot of emphasis is given to improving academic standards of the students by both national and school levels. Each year schools analyse their academic achievement explore ways to increase the achievement. Schools provide essential resources for the teachers to aid in teaching the content to diversity of students.
Teachers in the selected school put lot of effort in improving the achievement from Biology by using various strategies even though, students fail to put their best effort in learning. However, less effort and focus is given to teaching students with learning skills or improving student's Metacognition. Therefore, it is important to provide metacognitive training to the students who need it in order to improve their achievement from the subject rather than just focusing on the ways of delivering the content. Therefore, the objectives of this study is to identify the relationship between Student's Metacognition and Biology achievement in the selected school.
A cross sectional study design was adopted for this study. The population comprises of a selected secondary school which consists of adequate number of science students of high, average, and low abilities. Effect of other two variables which are likely to have an effect on or relationship with Metacognition are also studied. The relationship, tested were significant except for the relationship between Metacognition and Motivation
