Abstract:
One third of Maldivian population is students of primary and secondary schools. Maldivian students being relatively low at intellectual skills when compared to the other neighbouring countries is a challenge to Maldivian education systems. Due to the limited researches on this area, the current phenomenological research is intended to explore the teachers' perception regarding the role of mathematics in developing the intellectual skills of the students. It is also aimed at exploring the instructional strategies and the assessment procedures used in Mathematics in developing the intellectual skills of the students. Teachers' also believe that time and students' attitude are barriers to focus on intellectual thinking skills when delivering instructions.
Six mathematics teachers were interviewed using flexible semi-structures interview and also classroom observations, coordination meetings and assessment procedures were instrumental to the study.
The findings of the research suggest that the teachers mainly interpret intellectual thinking skills as applying what students learn to real life. In addition though the teachers believe that intellectual skills are highly important skills and the importance of these skills are immense to the students, the instructional strategies they use in their mathematics lessons do not stimulate the intellectual skills of the students. The teachers also believe that the subject mathematics and intellectual thinking skills are related. In addition, the assessments used in mathematics when analyzed showed that it contains higher order questions.
For the current research, limitations and recommendations for further research is also presented in the study.
