Abstract:
Development of mathematics skills becomes an extremely challenging task for Fuvahmulah students. Research shows that math anxiety and self-efficacy become crucial reasons for this. In this sense, it is vital to finding out the level of mathematics anxiety and self-efficacy exists among the students of Fuvahmulah in order to improve their performance. Therefore the objectives of this study are to find a level of mathematics anxiety exist in Fuvahmulah students and its correlation with self-efficacy. Also, this study investigates whether students' mathematics anxiety and self-efficacy differed significantly across three other variables: (a) Grade, (b) schools and (c) Gender. A cross-sectional survey design was employed in this study. The population comprises of three primary and one secondary schools of Fuvahmulah with a total number of 231 participants from middle and secondary students. Mathematics anxiety scale and self-efficacy scale were used for data collection. Independence t-test, one-way ANOVAs, person correlation, Spearmen correlation, Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U test statistical tests were used to analyze the data. Result showed that students' of Fuvahmulah have a moderate level of mathematics anxiety with significant differences between two schools. However, result showed no significant differences between gender and grade. On the other hand, result showed female students reported significantly higher level of self-efficacy than males. Students of grade 6 showed the highest level of self-efficacy than the students in different grades. Unlike other studies, this study revealed that there is a positive relationship between students' level of mathematics anxiety and their self-efficacy.
