Abstract

Affordability and accessibility of higher education is a subject that has been discussed by researchers over the years. In this research I have focused on finding the perception of affordability and accessibility of higher education in the Maldives. Also the effects of gender, income, urban and rural education and motivation on the perception of affordability and accessibility is discussed.
This is a quantitative cross sectional survey research where a questionnaire is used to collect data from the respondents. Stratified sampling technique is used and a sample of 166 adults is used in the study. The data collected were analyzed using the statistical software SPSS.
This research shows that Maldivians do not think that the higher education offered in Maldives is neither affordable nor accessible. It also shows that income, educational status, urban and rural education and gender has no effect on the perception of affordability and accessibility. However, it shows that if the people are motivated then they will go for higher education even though the higher education is expensive.
Keywords: affordability, accessibility, higher education in the Maldives, relationship between affordability and accessibility, public opinion of higher education, stratified sampling.
